Ingredients

  • 2 cups cubed soft bread
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 cup cooked peas
  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Mix bread cubes, shredded cheddar cheese, and 2 tablespoons melted butter; spread half the mixture in a greased 1-quart casserole dish and top with cooked peas.
  3. Cook and stir onion in 3 tablespoons butter until tender.
  4. Blend in flour, salt, and pepper.
  5. Cook over low heat, stirring until mixture is bubbly.
  6. Remove from heat.
  7. Stir in milk; heat to boiling, stirring constantly.
  8. Boil and stir for 1 minute.
  9. Stir in cooked meat and pour over the peas.
  10. Arrange tomato slices on top and sprinkle with remaining bread mixture.
  11. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes.
