Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup oatmeal
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 2 tablespoons wheat germ

Instructions

  1. Mix 1 1/2 cups flour, oatmeal, dry yeast, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Heat water, milk, and cooking oil until very warm; add wheat germ to dry ingredients and pour the heated liquid into it.
  3. Beat with a mixer at medium speed, add beaten egg, and continue beating for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in the remaining flour to form a stiff dough.
  5. Cover the dough and let it rise until doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours.
  6. Stir the batter down and spoon it into a greased loaf pan.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  8. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Remove from pan, brush the top with butter, and wrap in a clean dry towel for a few minutes.
  10. Unwrap and allow to cool before slicing.
