- Cut the crust off the white bread slices.
- Place the bread in a bowl and add milk.
- In a separate bowl, cream the butter until light and fluffy.
- Add sugar to the butter and beat until smooth.
- Add egg yolks one at a time, beating after each addition.
- Stir in grated orange rind, nutmeg, cinnamon, seedless raisins, and the bread mixture.
- Blend everything together with a wooden spoon.
- In a clean bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form.
- Gradually add 1/4 cup of sugar to the egg whites and beat until stiff peaks appear.
- Gently fold the egg whites into the bread mixture.
- Pour the mixture into a buttered square baking pan.
- Sprinkle generously with sugar on top.
- Place the pan into a larger pan filled with warm water.
- Bake in a preheated 325°F oven for 40 to 50 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
