Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of red wine or smoked paprika. You can substitute the round steak with chuck roast for a more tender result, and the pork loin chops can be replaced with pork shoulder. If you prefer, fresh tomatoes can be used instead of canned, just adjust the quantity to match the needed volume.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the stew hot, garnished with fresh herbs like parsley or chives. It pairs wonderfully with crusty bread or a side of Rice And Peas Or Beans for a hearty meal. For a full Southern experience, consider serving a side of Fried Tomatoes And Creamy Gravy alongside the stew.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, gently warm on the stove over low heat, adding a splash of water or broth if needed to loosen the stew. This dish also freezes well; just cool completely before transferring to freezer-safe containers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this stew in a slow cooker?

Yes, you can! Brown the meats and onions on the stovetop first for added flavor, then transfer everything to the slow cooker. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours until the meats are tender.

Is there a vegetarian version of Brunswick stew?

Absolutely! You can substitute the meats with hearty vegetables such as mushrooms, zucchini, and bell peppers. Use vegetable broth instead of water, and add beans for protein. Adjust the spices to suit your taste.

How can I thicken the stew if it’s too watery?

If your stew is too thin, try simmering it uncovered for a bit longer to reduce the liquid. Alternatively, you can mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with cold water to create a slurry and stir it into the stew until it thickens.
