Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and butter cookie sheets.
  2. Heat the molasses to boiling point.
  3. Add sugar, butter or shortening, and milk to the molasses and mix well.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and ground ginger.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the molasses mixture and blend well.
  6. Add a few tablespoons of water if needed, until the dough holds together and is easy to handle.
