Tips & Substitutions

For a more vibrant color, consider adding a few drops of food coloring to the dough. You can substitute the butter with coconut oil for a dairy-free option. If you don’t have hard sour candy, try using crushed hard candies like Jolly Ranchers for a similar effect. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a little extra flour while rolling it out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of candy for the filling?

Yes, you can experiment with different types of hard candies, such as lemon drops or cherry-flavored candies, for a unique twist. Just ensure they are crushed finely enough to fit in the cookie cutouts.

How can I make these cookies more festive?

You can enhance the festive look by using colored icing to decorate the cookies after baking. Adding sprinkles or edible glitter can also give them an extra special touch for Halloween celebrations.

Is it necessary to chill the dough?

Chilling the dough is essential for achieving the right texture and preventing the cookies from spreading too much while baking. If you're short on time, at least chill the dough for 30 minutes before rolling it out.
