Ingredients

  • 2 (1/4 oz.) pkg. dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 6 to 6 1/2 cups unbleached flour

Instructions

  1. Soften yeast in warm water.
  2. Place sugar and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Heat and stir milk and shortening until shortening melts (120° to 130°F).
  4. Add the milk and shortening mixture along with beaten eggs and yeast mixture to the bowl.
  5. Stir in 1 cup of flour at a time to form a soft dough that can be kneaded.
  6. Knead on a lightly floured board until smooth and elastic.
  7. Place the dough in a large greased bowl.
  8. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
