Granny'S Cabbage Casserole

A hearty, cheesy cabbage casserole with creamy mushroom soup and toasted bread crumbs, perfect for comforting family dinners or potlucks with classic flavors.

Ingredients

  • 1 large head cabbage (12 cups)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 6 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup (undiluted)
  • 8 ounces process American cheese, cubed (12 slices)
  • 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook cabbage in boiling salted water until tender; drain thoroughly.
  2. In a large skillet, sauté chopped onion in 5 tablespoons of butter until tender.
  3. Add undiluted cream of mushroom soup to the skillet and mix well.
  4. Add cubed processed American cheese and heat, stirring until melted.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in cooked cabbage, salt, and pepper.
  6. Transfer the mixture to an ungreased 2-quart baking dish.
  7. In a small skillet, melt remaining butter and cook bread crumbs in it until lightly browned.
  8. Sprinkle toasted bread crumbs over the casserole.
  9. Bake uncovered at 350°F for 20 to 30 minutes or until heated thoroughly.
