Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using a mix of pork shoulder and lean pork. If Anaheim chiles are not available, you can substitute with poblano chiles for a slightly spicier kick. Adjust the thickness of the soup by varying the amount of flour and water mixture. To enhance the flavor, try adding a pinch of cumin or coriander.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the green chile hot over warm tortillas for a comforting meal. It pairs beautifully with Frijoles Ala Charra on the side or can be used as a smothering sauce for burritos, chile rellenos, or enchiladas. A sprinkle of fresh cilantro or a dollop of sour cream can elevate the dish even further.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, simply warm on the stovetop over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through. If the soup thickens too much in the fridge, add a splash of water while reheating to reach your desired consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this recipe vegetarian?

Yes, you can substitute the pork with a variety of vegetables such as zucchini, mushrooms, or even beans for protein. Use vegetable broth instead of water to enhance the flavor. The cooking times may vary, so adjust accordingly until the vegetables are tender.

How do I make the soup spicier?

To increase the heat, you can add more Anaheim chiles or incorporate jalapeños or serrano peppers into the recipe. Additionally, a pinch of cayenne pepper or a splash of hot sauce can also boost the spice level without compromising the overall flavor.

Can I freeze the green chile?

Yes, this green chile soup freezes well. Allow it to cool completely before transferring it to freezer-safe containers. It can be stored for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and then warm on the stovetop, adding a bit of water if it's too thick.
