Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. flan, cooked and set
  • sweetened beans or garbanzos
  • palm seeds (in can or bottle)
  • jackfruit preserves (canned or in bottle)
  • Jell-O, cut into cubes
  • cooked yam, cut into cubes
  • cream
  • shaved or crushed ice
  • 3 c. cream of milk

Instructions

  1. In a tall, wide glass, put 1 tablespoon each of the flan, sweetened beans or garbanzos, palm seeds, jackfruit preserves, Jell-O cubes, and cooked yam cubes.
  2. Fill the rest of the glass with shaved or crushed ice.
  3. Pour 1/4 cup of cream or milk over the ice.
  4. Top with a scoop of ice cream, if desired, and serve.

Tips & Substitutions

For a creamier texture, consider using coconut milk instead of cream of milk. You can also customize the ingredients based on your preferences; for instance, replace jackfruit preserves with fresh fruit or even try adding a layer of sweetened coconut. If you don't have shaved ice, crushed ice works well too. Make sure to balance the sweetness of the beans and fruits to achieve a harmonious flavor.

Serving Suggestions

Serve Halo-Halo in tall, clear glasses to showcase the vibrant layers of ingredients. It pairs beautifully with a scoop of ice cream on top for added richness. Consider serving it alongside Filipino snacks like Lumpiang Shanghai or even a refreshing drink such as Sago't Gulaman. This dessert is perfect for warm weather or as a festive treat during gatherings.

Storage & Reheating

Halo-Halo is best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a day. Keep the components separate—store the flan, sweetened beans, and other ingredients in airtight containers. When ready to serve, mix together again, adding fresh ice and cream to revive the texture. Avoid freezing, as the ice will not maintain its quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make Halo-Halo ahead of time?

While you can prepare each component in advance, it's best to assemble Halo-Halo just before serving to keep the ice from melting and becoming watery. Prepare the flan, sweetened beans, and fruits a day ahead and store them separately in the fridge. Assemble right before you’re ready to enjoy for the best texture.

What can I substitute for the flan?

If you can't find flan, you can use store-bought custard or even a layer of sweetened condensed milk for a different twist. Alternatively, a vegan custard might work if you're looking for a plant-based option. Just keep in mind that the flavor and texture will differ slightly from traditional Halo-Halo.

Is Halo-Halo suitable for children?

Yes, Halo-Halo is typically a hit with children due to its colorful presentation and sweet flavors. Just be mindful of any allergies to certain ingredients like beans or fruits. You can also adjust the sweetness by using less syrup or opting for less sweet fruits to suit their taste preference.
