Ingredients

  • 2 c. ground ham
  • 1/2 c. onions, minced
  • 1 large clove garlic, pureed
  • 1 1/2 c. Italian bread crumbs
  • 1/2 c. grated cheese (Swiss, Cheddar, Mozzarella or a mix)
  • 2 whole eggs
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • sage and thyme to taste
  • 1 large head cabbage
  • 1 c. sliced onions
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 (28 oz.) can Italian style tomatoes

Instructions

  1. Stir the ground ham, minced onions, pureed garlic, Italian bread crumbs, grated cheese, eggs, salt, pepper, sage, and thyme together in a bowl to make the filling.
  2. Drop the head of cabbage into a large pot of boiling water and nudge off the leaves as they loosen.
  3. Divide the filling into 12 portions, roll each into a sausage shape, and wrap them in cabbage leaves.
  4. In a large frypan, sauté the sliced onions with butter until translucent.
  5. Arrange the cabbage rolls in a single layer in the frypan.
  6. Add the Italian style tomatoes with juice, salt, and pepper to taste to the pan.
  7. Bury the bay leaves in the pan, cover, and simmer slowly for 30 minutes, basting occasionally, until the cabbage is tender.
