Hot Crossed Buns

Warm, spiced, and sweet hot cross buns feature currants or raisins, topped with crosses and icing, perfect for Easter brunch or cozy gatherings with family and friends.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 packets yeast
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 12 tablespoons melted butter
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 4 eggs
  • 5 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup currants or raisins

Instructions

  1. Mix warm milk, yeast, sugar, salt, melted butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl.
  2. Add eggs and mix well.
  3. Gradually add flour and knead until a smooth dough forms.
  4. Cover the dough and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape into rolls or buns.
  6. Place buns on a baking sheet, brush with egg white if desired, and let rise again until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  7. Cut crosses on top of each bun with a sharp knife or pastry cutter.
  8. Bake at 375°F until golden brown, approximately 15 minutes.
  9. Pipe powdered sugar icing over the crosses on top of the buns.
