A soft, sweet, and flavorful challah bread with a slightly honeyed taste, perfect for special occasions or as a delightful accompaniment to any meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. yeast
  • 4 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 3/4 cups hot water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 4 cups flour approximately
  • 1 cup oil

Instructions

  1. Combine yeast, salt, honey, and hot water in a bowl and stir.
  2. Add 2 cups of flour, oil, and eggs to the mixture.
  3. Start adding additional flour gradually.
  4. Use approximately 6 cups of flour in total.
  5. Keep adding flour and knead until the dough is no longer sticky.
  6. Put the dough into an oiled bowl.
  7. Cover and leave in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  8. Remove from the bowl, punch down the dough, and divide into sections for braiding.
  9. Braid into one large or two smaller challahs.
  10. Allow the braided challah to double in size.
  11. Brush with beaten egg yolks thinned with one tablespoon of water.
  12. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 50 minutes.
