  • 1 c. sour cream
  • garlic salt
  • lots of chopped green onions
  • lots of shredded Cheddar cheese
  • lots of chopped tomatoes, drained on paper towel
  • shredded lettuce
  • dry taco seasoning
  • picante sauce
  • black olives, sliced and drained
  • 2 or 3 avocados, sliced thin and soaked in lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Cream together the cream cheese, sour cream, garlic salt, and half of the taco seasoning.
  2. Layer the ingredients in a flat dish in the following order: cream mixture, chopped green onions, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped drained tomatoes, picante sauce, sliced drained black olives, sliced soaked avocados, cooked bacon (if using), shredded lettuce, and more cheese.
  3. Garnish the top with the remaining taco seasoning.
  4. Serve with Doritos, taco chips, or large Fritos.

Tips & Substitutions

For a creamier dip, consider adding a bit of mayonnaise to the cream cheese mixture. If you're short on time, pre-shredded cheese works just as well as freshly shredded. You can substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream for a healthier option. For a spicier kick, try adding jalapeños or using a spicy picante sauce. This dip is great for parties or as an appetizer alongside Mexican recipes.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this La Puerta Taco Dip with Doritos, taco chips, or large Fritos for a delightful crunch. It pairs beautifully with Baked Taco Layered for a full meal. You can also provide extra toppings like fresh cilantro or diced jalapeños for guests to customize their servings. This dip is perfect for game day or casual gatherings.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, gently warm in the microwave or let it sit at room temperature before serving again. Note that the texture may change slightly upon reheating, so it's best enjoyed fresh. If the avocados start to brown, sprinkle them with a bit more lemon juice before storing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this dip ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the cream cheese mixture and layer the ingredients a day in advance. Just cover it tightly and refrigerate until ready to serve. Add fresh ingredients like avocado and lettuce just before serving to keep them from wilting.

What can I substitute for cream cheese?

If you're looking for alternatives, you can use a dairy-free cream cheese for a vegan option or a thick Greek yogurt for a lighter, tangy flavor. Both will provide a creamy texture that complements the other ingredients.

Is there a way to make this dip spicier?

Absolutely! You can incorporate diced jalapeños or use a spicy taco seasoning in place of the regular. Additionally, consider adding some hot sauce to the cream cheese mixture for an extra kick. Experimenting with different picante sauce varieties can also enhance the heat.
