  • chocolate chips

  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating very slowly after each addition.
  4. Pour in the dry ingredients and mix well.

  6. Drop chocolate chips on top of each filled cup.
  7. Refrigerate the cups for 24 hours.
  8. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes.
  9. Allow to cool slightly; they will sink in the middle, creating a place for ice cream with caramel and nuts.
  10. The bottom should be a bit gooey, giving the dessert its lava-like texture.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider substituting half of the white sugar with brown sugar. If you want a lighter texture, try using egg whites instead of whole eggs. Ensure the chocolate chips are semi-sweet for a balanced sweetness. Always remember to beat slowly after adding eggs to avoid overmixing, which can affect the texture. Serving Suggestions

Serve the lava dessert warm, allowing the gooey center to flow out. It pairs beautifully with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce. You can also top it with chopped nuts for added texture. For a complete meal, consider serving with Mini Sub Sandwiches or a light salad to balance the richness of the dessert.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, place the cups in a microwave for about 15-20 seconds, just until warm. Avoid overheating, as this can make the lava texture less gooey. If you prefer to eat them cold, they can also be enjoyed straight from the fridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the lava dessert in advance?

Yes, you can prepare the batter and fill the cups up to 24 hours in advance. Just remember to refrigerate them and bake when you're ready to serve. This makes it perfect for dinner parties or special occasions.

What can I do if I don't have almond extract?

If you don't have almond extract, you can substitute it with an equal amount of vanilla extract or omit it entirely. The dessert will still taste delicious without it, or you could use a splash of orange extract for a different flavor profile.

How do I know when the dessert is done baking?

The dessert is done when the edges are set, but the center is still soft and slightly jiggly. It’s important not to overbake, as the gooey center is what gives it the lava-like texture. If in doubt, err on the side of underbaking.
