  • 11 oz. cream cheese
  • 2 Tbsp. mayonnaise
  • 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1/2 c. chopped onions
  • dash of garlic
  • 1 jar cocktail sauce
  • 7 to 8 oz. squeezed dry crab meat
  • 2 Tbsp. chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Mix well the cream cheese, mayonnaise, Worcestershire, lemon juice, chopped onions, and garlic; spread on a flat dish.
  2. Pour 1/2 to 2/3 jar of cocktail sauce over the cream cheese mixture.
  3. Sprinkle crab meat on top of the sauce.
  4. Sprinkle chopped parsley over the crab meat.
  5. Serve on Ritz crackers.

Tips & Substitutions

For a smoother spread, allow the cream cheese to soften at room temperature before mixing. If you're out of Worcestershire sauce, a combination of soy sauce and a splash of vinegar can work as a substitute. Fresh crab meat is best, but if unavailable, canned crab can be used; just make sure to drain it well. This recipe can also be adjusted by adding a touch of hot sauce for some heat.

Serving Suggestions

This Layered Crab Spread is perfect for gatherings and pairs beautifully with Ritz crackers. For a more substantial offering, consider serving it alongside a fresh vegetable platter or as a part of a seafood recipes spread, like a Low Country Shrimp Boil ('Frogmore Stew'). It also makes an excellent appetizer for holiday parties.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. If you need to reheat it, do so gently in the microwave, using short intervals to prevent the spread from becoming too warm or losing its texture. It's best enjoyed cold, so consider serving it straight from the fridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of seafood for this spread?

Absolutely! You can substitute crab meat with shrimp or even canned tuna if you prefer. Just make sure to adjust the seasoning to complement the different flavors. This flexibility allows you to tailor the recipe to your liking while maintaining the layered spread concept.

How can I make this spread spicier?

To add some heat, consider mixing in a few dashes of hot sauce to the cream cheese mixture or incorporating finely diced jalapeños. Additionally, you could sprinkle some cayenne pepper on top of the crab meat for a flavorful kick. This will enhance the dish without overpowering the seafood flavors.

What can I serve this spread with besides crackers?

While Ritz crackers are traditional, this spread also goes well with toasted baguette slices, pita chips, or even fresh vegetable sticks like celery and bell peppers. For a more substantial option, try serving it alongside Clam Puffs On Toast for an appealing seafood appetizer platter.
