Lilliput Meat Balls are tiny, flavorful beef bites simmered in a savory tomato and sherry sauce, perfect for entertaining or casual gatherings with toothpicks for easy eating.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup catsup
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup grated soft bread crumbs
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated onion
  • 1/2 cup sherry
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix ground beef, grated bread crumbs, milk, finely grated onion, and salt thoroughly.
  2. Shape the mixture into small balls, approximately one teaspoon each.
  3. Melt butter or margarine in a large, heavy skillet over medium heat.
  4. Brown the meat balls on all sides until nicely colored.
  5. Pour off most of the fat from the pan.
  6. Mix sherry, catsup, and oregano (if using).
  7. Pour the sauce mixture over the meat balls in the skillet.
  8. Add salt to taste.
  9. Cover the skillet and simmer gently for about 20 minutes, shaking gently from time to time to cook the balls evenly.
  10. Serve in a chafing dish or pottery casserole, with toothpicks for spearing the meat balls.
