Ingredients

  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. cocoa
  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. sour milk
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 c. flour

Instructions

  1. Mix shortening and sugar, then add eggs and salt.
  2. Pour boiling water over cocoa and mix well.
  3. Combine the cocoa mixture with the egg and sugar mixture.
  4. Add vanilla extract to the batter.
  5. Alternate adding flour and sour milk, along with baking soda, to the mixture.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
  7. Bake in a 325°F (163°C) oven for 40 minutes.
