Ingredients

  • 5 eggs, beaten
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons allspice
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup jam (blackberry jam with seeds preferred)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cloves
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and gradually add sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add beaten eggs and mix well.
  3. Sift flour before measuring and set aside.
  4. Add allspice, cinnamon, cloves, and salt to the flour and mix.
  5. Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk.
  6. Add buttermilk mixture and flour mixture to the batter, beating after each addition.
  7. Lightly dredge raisins and chopped pecans with extra flour and fold into the batter.
  8. Add jam and stir to combine.
  9. Pour batter into two greased and wax paper-lined 9-inch cake pans.
  10. Bake at 325°F (160°C) until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
