- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a mixing bowl, cream together sugar and butter.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Stir in buttermilk and baking soda until smooth.
- In a separate bowl, mix flour with apples, black walnuts, and raisins to coat them evenly.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter into 4 greased or parchment-lined cake pans.
- Bake for approximately 15-20 minutes per layer, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow cakes to cool before stacking and frosting as desired.
