Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup dairy sour cream
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon maple flavor
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Combine brown sugar, sour cream, egg, and maple flavor in a medium bowl; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, allspice, and salt.
  4. Using a pastry blender or two knives, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture; stir in sour cream mixture until moistened.
  6. Turn dough out onto a floured surface.
  7. Gently knead the dough by folding and pressing for 10 to 12 strokes or until nearly smooth.
  8. Pat dough to 1-inch (2.5 cm) thickness.
  9. Using a floured 2-inch (5 cm) biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits.
  10. Place biscuits 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet.
  11. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes or until bottoms are brown and sides are firm.
  12. Remove from the oven and transfer biscuits from the baking sheet.
