Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup red food color
  • 2 1/2 cups Softasilk cake flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 5 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup cooking oil
  • 3/4 cup cold water
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

Instructions

  1. Stir cocoa, white sugar, red food color, and boiling water until smooth; set aside to cool.
  2. Sift together cake flour, sugar, baking powder, and cream of tartar into a mixing bowl.
  3. Add egg yolks, cooking oil, cold water, and vanilla to the dry ingredients; beat until smooth.
  4. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  5. Gradually fold the egg yolk mixture into the beaten egg whites with a rubber scraper until blended.
  6. Divide half of the batter into another bowl.
  7. Pour the cooled cocoa mixture into the reserved batter and mix gradually.
  8. Pour alternate layers of the light and dark batter into an ungreased tube pan.
  9. Bake at 325°F (160°C) for 55 minutes.
  10. Allow to cool and serve with your preferred icing.
