  1. Sift flour, baking soda, and salt together. Set aside.
  2. Mash bananas and set aside.
  3. Cream the sugar and shortening until well blended.
  4. Add eggs and mix well. Add buttermilk and vanilla; mix thoroughly.
  5. Add mashed bananas (about half at a time) and mix well after each addition.
  6. Add dry ingredients (about half at a time) and mix well after each addition.
  7. Stir in chopped nuts with a spatula or spoon.
  8. Spray loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray and pour batter into the pan.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Cool before slicing. Can freeze or refrigerate.
