- Cream butter, gradually adding sugar until mixture is light and fluffy.
- Beat well after each addition.
- Add egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add flour mixture and milk to the creamed mixture alternately, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix well after each addition.
- Stir in almond extract.
- In a clean bowl, beat egg whites at room temperature until stiff peaks form.
- Gently fold egg whites into the batter.
- Spoon batter evenly into two greased and floured 8-inch pans.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes.
- Cool in pans for 10 minutes.
- Remove cakes from pans and cool completely.
- Frost the cake as desired.
