Ingredients

  • 3 cups water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 1 pound raisins

Instructions

  1. Sift flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves onto a sheet of waxed paper.
  2. Bring water to a boil.
  3. Add raisins and sugar and boil for 10 minutes.
  4. Remove from the heat.
  5. Add butter, walnuts, and the dry ingredients.
  6. Mix well and spoon into two greased loaf pans.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 45 to 50 minutes.
  8. Loaf pans may be lined with foil to make removal easier; the foil should also be greased.
