Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Mix shortening, sugar, molasses, and eggs until well combined.
  2. Add remaining ingredients, including flour, allspice, cinnamon, salt, and cloves.
  3. Stir in buttermilk and baking soda last to activate leavening.
  4. Pour batter into three 9-inch or four 8-inch baking pans.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for approximately 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow cakes to cool before assembling with applesauce or dried apples as filling.
