Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 4 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1/8 tsp. soda

Instructions

  1. Boil the sugar, water, vinegar, and molasses in a heavy iron skillet, stirring frequently.
  2. Add the cream of tartar and continue cooking until the mixture reaches brittle stage in cold water.
  3. Remove from heat; add butter, soda, and vanilla, and stir well.
  4. Pour the hot mixture into a buttered pan and let it cool.
  5. Butter your hands and pull the cooled candy until it becomes glossy and elastic.
  6. Twist the pulled candy into strips and cut into pieces.
