Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon clove
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Bring to a boil and cook the sugar, shortening, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, and water for 5 minutes.
  2. Allow the mixture to cool.
  3. Add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and vanilla to the cooled mixture and mix well.
  4. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 50 minutes.
