Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/2 c. dark brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. molasses
  • 1 c. boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Grease and flour an 8-inch square pan.
  3. Combine the all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, ground cloves, dry mustard, and black pepper in a bowl.
  4. Set the dry mixture aside.
  5. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and then mix in the molasses.
  6. Gradually add the boiling water to the mixture, stirring constantly.
  7. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until well combined.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow to cool before serving.
