Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups molasses
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 sticks butter
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup hot tap water
  • 2 1/2 cups plain flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar together.
  2. Add eggs; stir in molasses.
  3. Sift flour, spices, and salt together.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture.
  5. Put soda in boiling water and add to batter, beating constantly by hand.
  6. Pour batter into 4 greased and floured 9-inch pans.
  7. Bake at 350°F until done, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  8. Cool the cakes and stack them together with applesauce between the layers.
