Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup cocoa
  • 1 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup sour milk or buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a bowl in the order given; do not mix initially. After all ingredients have been added, beat well until smooth.
  2. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan.
  3. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
