Ingredients

  • 2 cups Great Northern beans
  • 6 cups hot tap water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup catsup
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 pound bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion

Instructions

  1. Place beans and hot tap water in a 3-quart casserole.
  2. Cook, covered, on full power for 10 to 13 minutes or until boiling.
  3. Let stand, covered, for 1 hour.
  4. Add salt, baking soda, and vegetable oil to the beans.
  5. Cook, covered, on full power for 9 to 12 minutes or until boiling.
  6. Continue cooking on Cook Level 3 for 30 to 35 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally.
  7. Drain the liquid from the beans, reserving 1 1/4 cups of liquid.
  8. Stir in catsup, vinegar, brown sugar, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, molasses, cooked crumbled bacon, and chopped onion.
