Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup solid vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees)
  • 1 envelope active dry yeast
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup confectioners sugar

Instructions

  1. Heat milk, sugar, shortening, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat until the shortening is melted.
  2. Let the mixture cool until lukewarm.
  3. Pour warm water into a large bowl.
  4. Sprinkle yeast over the water and let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  5. Stir to dissolve the yeast.
  6. Add the cooled milk mixture, eggs, and 1/2 cup of flour to the yeast mixture.
  7. Beat with a wooden spoon until smooth.
  8. Stir in the remaining flour until the dough comes together.
  9. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes or until smooth and silky.
  10. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turn to coat, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  11. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  12. Coat a 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray.
  13. Punch down the risen dough, press it into the prepared pan, and cover.
  14. Let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until almost doubled.
  15. Crumble the streusel topping evenly over the dough.
  16. Bake for 30 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean and crumbs are slightly brown and crisp.
  17. Cool in the pan on a rack for 30 minutes.
  18. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar, cut into 16 squares, and serve warm or at room temperature.
