Sweet onion petals are coated in crunchy cracker crumbs and fried to golden perfection, offering a savory, crispy appetizer perfect for sharing at gatherings or casual snacking.

Ingredients

  • 1 large Vidalia or sweet onion
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup crackers
  • vegetable oil
  • 1/2 tsp. salt (optional)
  • dark honey mustard or Ranch dressing

Instructions

  1. Peel the onion, leaving the root intact.
  2. Cut the onion vertically into quarters, leaving about 1/2 inch of the root uncut.
  3. Cut each quarter into thirds.
  4. Place the onion in boiling water for 1 minute, then transfer it to ice water for 5 minutes.
  5. Loosen the petals of the onion. Drain the onion, placing it cut side down.
  6. Place the flour in a zip-top bag.
  7. Add the onion to the bag and shake to coat with flour.
  8. Dip the onion in the beaten egg.
  9. Place the cracker crumbs in the bag.
  10. Add the onion back into the bag and toss to coat with crumbs.
  11. Chill the coated onion for 1 hour.
  12. Pour vegetable oil to a depth of 3 inches in a deep fryer or saucepan and heat to 375°F (190°C).
  13. Fry the onion for 5 to 7 minutes or until golden brown.
  14. Drain the onion on paper towels.
  15. Sprinkle with optional salt.
  16. Serve with dark honey mustard or Ranch dressing.
