Ingredients

  • 2 large onions
  • 1 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1/4 tsp. sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 6 c. beef broth
  • 1/4 c. white wine
  • 4 to 8 slices French bread
  • 2 tsp. vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Cook onions in butter and oil for 15 minutes in a Dutch oven, stirring occasionally.
  2. Add sugar and cook for an additional 15 minutes until the onions are brown.
  3. Sprinkle onions with flour; blend in hot broth, white wine, and seasonings.
  4. Simmer the mixture for 30 minutes.
  5. Lightly toast French bread in a 350° oven for 20 minutes.
  6. Baste each slice of bread with 1/2 teaspoon of vegetable oil and garlic.
  7. Serve the soup with toast floating on top and sprinkle the toast with cheese.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes.
  9. Serve hot.
