Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt or buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick cold unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup blanched sliced almonds
  • 1 tablespoon orange peel

Instructions

  1. Grate the orange peel and measure out the orange juice and buttermilk.
  2. Add the egg to the orange juice and buttermilk and beat until smooth.
  3. Mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a large bowl.
  4. Cut in the cold unsalted butter until the mixture resembles fine crumbs.
  5. Stir in the sugar, sliced almonds, and orange peel.
  6. Pour in the egg mixture and mix until a soft dough forms.
  7. Knead the dough 5 to 6 times until well combined.
  8. Form the dough into a ball and pat it into a circle; cut into smaller shapes or circles.
  9. Place the shaped dough on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  10. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25 minutes or until medium brown or golden.
