Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup dried currants or raisins
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange peel
  • 1 cup light sour cream
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup sugar, dried currants, and grated orange peel.
  5. Stir the sugar mixture into the flour mixture.
  6. Add the light sour cream and egg yolk; mix until just combined.
  7. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently a few times.
  8. Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick circle and cut into wedges.
  9. Place the wedges on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  10. Brush the tops with the beaten egg white.
  11. Sprinkle with remaining sugar if desired.
  12. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  13. Serve warm or cooled.
