Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 2 tablespoons yeast
  • 1 1/4 tablespoons salt
  • 3/4 cup oil
  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour

Instructions

  1. Stir together brown sugar, 3 tablespoons of flour, and 3 cups of boiling water until dissolved.
  2. Add the yeast and let it sit until the yeast starts to work and becomes frothy.
  3. Add the salt, oil, and whole-wheat flour to the mixture.
  4. Mix well and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Cover the bowl with a tea towel and place it in a warm oven with the pilot light on to rise until about doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough, form into loaves, and place on a cookie sheet.
  7. Let the loaves rise again until nearly doubled, then knead briefly and place in pans.
  8. Allow the dough to rise once more, then bake in a preheated oven until golden brown.
