- Heat 1/4 cup water to a boil.
- Pour it on the baking soda in a cup to dissolve and cool.
- In a large bowl or pitcher, mix the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, and salt.
- Stir in the buttermilk and beaten egg; beat well.
- Heat the griddle until a few drops of water dance on it.
- Rub the griddle well with salt pork.
- Stir the baking soda solution into the batter.
- Make pancake men, one at a time, in the center of the griddle.
- Fill a serving spoon with batter; pour it in adjoining circles to form the torso, head, arms, and legs.
- When bubbles form and burst in the batter, turn the pancake men with a spatula and cook equally long on the other side.
- Grease the griddle again before the next pouring.
- Serve with maple syrup.
