Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 3 eggs
  • 6 1/2 cups unsifted flour

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, heat milk just until bubbles start to form around the edge of the pan.
  2. Cool the milk to lukewarm temperature.
  3. Sprinkle yeast over warm water in a large bowl, stirring until dissolved.
  4. Stir in the milk mixture. Add 2 eggs and 3 cups of flour.
  5. Beat with an electric mixer until smooth, about 2 minutes.
  6. Gradually add 3 more cups of flour, mixing with hand until dough is stiff enough to leave the side of the bowl.
  7. Turn out dough onto a floured pastry cloth or board.
