Peanut Butter Thumbprints

- Heat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Combine shortening, peanut butter, brown sugar, milk, and vanilla in a large bowl.
- Beat at medium speed with an electric mixer until well blended.
- Add the egg and beat just until blended.
- Combine flour, salt, and baking soda in a separate bowl.
- Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture at low speed.
- Mix just until blended.
- Shape the dough into 1-inch balls and place on an ungreased baking sheet.
- Make an indentation in the center of each ball with your thumb or the back of a spoon.
- Fill each indentation with strawberry jam.
- Bake for 10 minutes or until lightly browned.
