Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 c. flour
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cardamon
  • 1/4 c. candied orange rind, finely chopped
  • 1 1/4 c. sifted confectioners sugar
  • red and green candied cherries
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. anise seed, crushed
  • 1/4 c. candied citron, finely chopped
  • 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. milk

Instructions

  1. Sift together the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, cloves and pepper.
  2. Stir in anise seed, cardamon, citron and orange rind until well mixed; set aside.
  3. Beat butter and 1 cup confectioners sugar until well mixed.
  4. Beat in egg.
  5. Add flour mixture just until blended.
  6. Chill overnight, or until firm enough to handle.
  7. Roll dough (about 1 teaspoon) at a time into small balls.
  8. Place 2 inches apart on cookie sheets.
  9. Top each with a piece of candied cherry.
  10. Stir milk into remaining 1/4 cup confectioners sugar until smooth.
  11. Drizzle very lightly over top of each cookie.
  12. Bake in moderate oven at 350° for 8 minutes, or until very lightly browned.
  13. Remove from cookie sheets at once with spatula.
  14. Cool completely on wire rack.
