Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 cups sifted cake flour
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 6 ounces chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 teaspoons double-acting baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Reserve 1 1/2 tablespoons of chocolate chips for garnishing.
  2. Preheat the oven and prepare your cake pan.
  3. In a mixing bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  5. Stir in vanilla extract.
  6. Combine sifted cake flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl.
  7. Gradually add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  8. Fold in the chocolate chips (except the reserved ones) into the batter.
  9. Pour batter into prepared cake pan.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  11. Allow the cake to cool completely.
  12. Garnish the top with the reserved chocolate chips before serving.
