  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 5 unbeaten egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup Wesson oil
  • 1 cup egg whites
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar

Instructions

  1. Stir the boiling water and poppy seed until smooth and cool.

  3. Add the Wesson oil, egg yolks, cooled poppy seed mixture, and vanilla into the well.
  4. Beat with a spoon until well combined.

  8. Bake at 325°F (160°C) for 55 minutes, then at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes.

Tips & Substitutions

For a lighter texture, ensure your egg whites are whipped to stiff peaks before folding them into the yolk mixture. If you don't have Wesson oil, you can substitute it with a neutral oil like canola or vegetable oil. To enhance the flavor, consider adding a teaspoon of almond extract along with the vanilla. This Poppy Seed Chiffon Cake is great for special occasions and can be served with fresh fruit.

Serving Suggestions

This cake is delightful on its own but pairs beautifully with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Consider serving it alongside fresh berries or a fruit compote to add a fresh contrast. For a full meal, serve it with Joanna'S Favorite Chicken Noodles for a comforting experience.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover Poppy Seed Chiffon Cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you need to keep it longer, refrigerate it for up to a week. To reheat, simply microwave a slice for about 10-15 seconds or warm it gently in an oven set to 300°F (150°C) for a few minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of flour for this recipe?

You can use almond flour for a gluten-free version, but the texture will differ. If using whole wheat flour, the cake may be denser, so consider blending it with all-purpose flour for a lighter result.

What can I do if I don't have poppy seeds?

If you don't have poppy seeds, you can substitute them with sesame seeds for a similar crunch and flavor. Alternatively, you can skip them altogether, but the cake will lose its signature taste.

How can I prevent my chiffon cake from sticking to the pan?

To prevent sticking, ensure you use a tube pan and do not grease it. The batter needs to cling to the sides as it rises. Once baked, let the cake cool upside down in the pan for at least an hour before removing it.
