Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons gelatin
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups whipped cream
  • 1 baked 8-inch pie shell

Instructions

  1. Scald the milk in a double boiler.
  2. Soak the gelatin in cold water.
  3. Mix together sugar, cornstarch, salt, and egg yolks.
  4. Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, stirring constantly, then return to the double boiler.
  5. Cook until the mixture thickens.
  6. Remove from heat and add the soaked gelatin, butter, and vanilla. Chill until cooled.
  7. When the mixture is cool, beat the egg whites until stiff and fold into the cooled mixture.
  8. Pour the filling into the baked pie shell.
  9. Sprinkle with nutmeg and chill for several hours.
  10. Before serving, spread with whipped cream and garnish with chocolate curls.
