- Scald the milk in a double boiler.
- Soak the gelatin in cold water.
- Mix together sugar, cornstarch, salt, and egg yolks.
- Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, stirring constantly, then return to the double boiler.
- Cook until the mixture thickens.
- Remove from heat and add the soaked gelatin, butter, and vanilla. Chill until cooled.
- When the mixture is cool, beat the egg whites until stiff and fold into the cooled mixture.
- Pour the filling into the baked pie shell.
- Sprinkle with nutmeg and chill for several hours.
- Before serving, spread with whipped cream and garnish with chocolate curls.
