Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup margarine, softened
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 egg
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • colored sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar, margarine, milk, vanilla, almond extract, and egg until well combined.
  2. Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt until the dough comes together.
  3. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Divide the chilled dough into 4 equal squares.
  6. Take one square and divide it into 12 equal pieces, keeping remaining dough refrigerated.
  7. Sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of colored sugar on a work surface.
  8. Roll each piece into a pencil-like strip on the sugared surface and twist into a pretzel shape.
  9. Place the pretzels on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  10. Repeat with remaining dough pieces.
  11. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown.
