Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 3/4 c. molasses
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 Tbsp. water
  • 1 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. cloves or ginger
  • 1/2 c. hot water

Instructions

  1. Beat shortening, sugar, and egg together until well combined.
  2. Mix 1 tablespoon of water with the soda until frothy.
  3. Add the soda mixture, molasses, flour, salt, and spices to the creamed mixture.
  4. Add hot water and mix until smooth.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased square pan.
  6. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25 minutes.
