Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 4 cups white bread cubes
  • 1 quart milk
  • 5 eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • few grains nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Rinse raisins and drain.
  2. Combine honey and bread cubes; cook over low heat and stir until bread absorbs honey (2 to 3 minutes).
  3. Blend milk, slightly beaten eggs, sugar, salt, and vanilla together.
  4. Add the milk mixture and raisins to the honey-coated bread cubes; mix well.
  5. Pour the mixture into a buttered baking dish.
  6. Sprinkle with nutmeg on top.
  7. Place the dish in a pan of hot water and bake in a moderate oven at 350°F for 1 hour or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Serve plain or with whipped cream.
