- Remove skin from the large can of salmon and drain any excess liquid.
- Mix finely chopped onion, finely chopped green pepper, and 1 1/2 cups mayonnaise in a bowl.
- Spread the salmon evenly over the split hamburger buns.
- Pile the mayonnaise mixture on top of the salmon on each bun.
- Place a tomato slice on top of the mayonnaise mixture on each bun.
- Mix 1/2 cup mayonnaise with 1/2 cup grated cheese to prepare the topping.
- Spread the cheese and mayonnaise mixture over the tomato slices.
- Place the buns under a broiler until the topping is puffed and browned.
