- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Line a 9 x 13-inch cake pan with foil and spread butter over the foil.
- Arrange a layer of saltine crackers over the buttered foil.
- In a saucepan, mix together brown sugar and butter. Bring to a boil and cook for 3 minutes.
- Pour the caramel mixture over the saltine crackers.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot caramel layer.
- Allow the chips to melt, then spread them evenly over the surface.
- Sprinkle with slivered almonds or finely chopped walnuts if desired.
- Allow to cool completely before breaking into pieces.
