Sweet and crunchy Saltine Heath Bars feature a buttery caramel layer topped with chocolate and nuts, perfect for satisfying a quick dessert craving or sharing at gatherings.

Ingredients

  • saltine crackers
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 12 oz chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Line a 9 x 13-inch cake pan with foil and spread butter over the foil.
  3. Arrange a layer of saltine crackers over the buttered foil.
  4. In a saucepan, mix together brown sugar and butter. Bring to a boil and cook for 3 minutes.
  5. Pour the caramel mixture over the saltine crackers.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 5 to 10 minutes.
  7. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot caramel layer.
  8. Allow the chips to melt, then spread them evenly over the surface.
  9. Sprinkle with slivered almonds or finely chopped walnuts if desired.
  10. Allow to cool completely before breaking into pieces.
